Short TL;DR Version

  • Just a Guy: This is a personal project, no giant corporation behind. The "we" used on this page is standard legalese referring to the operator and the service.
  • No Selling: I don't sell or misuse your data, and the whole thing is built with robust security measures to protect your personal information.
  • What's being collected: Your movie library, ratings, and viewing preferences to power the recommendations and organizing features.
  • Cookies: Standard essential tokens to keep you logged in. Optional cookies (for analytics and trailers) are off by default unless you enable them.
  • Your Rights: You can download your data or delete your account (which wipes your data) at any time from your settings.

This page explains our policies regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of Personal Data and other information related to your use of the ReelsGraph Service.

By using ReelsGraph and any related tools and services we operate, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Who we are

ReelsGraph (referred to in this Privacy Policy as "we", "us" or "our") is a personal project operated by an individual. While this policy uses the standard terms "we", "us", and "our" to refer to the Service and its systems, please keep in mind that this is currently a one-person operation. For the purposes of applicable data protection laws, this individual is the data controller responsible for the processing of your Personal Data described in this policy.

You can contact the data controller using the details set out in the Contact Us section below.

Definitions

ReelsGraph ("we", "us" or "our") refers to the owner and operators of this Service.

Service refers to the ReelsGraph website and any related tools and services we operate.

Personal Data is data about a living individual who can be identified from those data (or from those and other information either in our possession or which we may reasonably obtain). Personal data can be identifiers such as your email address, or internal ID numbers that exist solely within our system.

Usage Data is data collected automatically by the Service or by third-party services integrated in it. This can include technical data such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages that you visit, but also your activity within the Service, such as logged-in actions and proceeding through the discovery queue.

Cookies are small files stored on your device that help the Service function and improve your experience.

Information We Collect

We collect several different types of information for various purposes to provide and improve our Service to you.

Types of Data Collected

Account Data

When you register with ReelsGraph, you can create an account without providing an email address. If you choose to provide an email address, it's used for account verification and for sending important updates related to the Service. You may also opt in to receive periodic summary emails that highlight activity you may have missed, such as friend activity, new releases, and personalized recommendations. These emails are only sent after a period of inactivity and only if you have explicitly enabled them in your account settings. You may optionally provide a display name, profile picture, description and background image, which are used to personalize your experience and may be displayed to other users if you choose to share your profile.

Movie and Activity Data

The core functionality of ReelsGraph relies on collecting and processing data about the movies you have watched, want to watch, and have interacted with. This includes:

  • Movies you review or add to your watchlist, including their status (such as watched or want to watch).
  • Reviews and lists you import from third-party services, for example Letterboxd CSV exports you upload yourself.
  • Ratings, tags, and other preferences you explicitly provide within ReelsGraph.
  • Metadata about movies, such as genres, directors, release dates, and streaming availability by region.

We use this data to provide personalized recommendations, ranking and filtering of movies, and other features of the Service.

Usage Data

We may collect information automatically whenever you visit or use the Service. This Usage Data may include information such as your computer's Internet Protocol address (IP address), browser type, browser version, the pages you visit, the time and date of your visit, your actions within the Service (such as what you click on), the time spent on those pages, and other diagnostic data.

To keep the Service running reliably and to troubleshoot problems, our servers record aggregated technical information such as page views, error messages and basic timing data. These logs are used to understand how the Service is performing and to protect it from abuse. They are not used to build marketing profiles or to track you across different websites, and they are automatically rotated and deleted after a limited period as described in the Data Retention section.

If you choose to enable optional cookies, we may also use Microsoft Clarity to collect more detailed session analytics (for example how you scroll and click on pages) so we can see which parts of the interface are working well and which are confusing. This is described in more detail in the Cookies and Similar Technologies section.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to operate the Service and to understand how it is used.

We distinguish between:

  • Essential cookies: small text files that are strictly necessary to run the Service, for example to keep you signed in, maintain your session, remember your basic preferences, and help protect against abuse. These cookies are required for the site to function and are set when you sign in or otherwise use features that rely on them. You can block them in your browser, but some parts of the Service will not work properly.
  • Optional cookies: cookies and similar technologies used for additional features, such as Microsoft Clarity (analytics that help us understand how users navigate the site) and embedded YouTube trailers. These are only used if you choose to enable optional cookies via the cookie banner or your privacy settings.

When you first visit ReelsGraph, we show you a cookie banner that allows you to accept or decline optional cookies. Your choice is stored and honoured on subsequent visits, and you can change it at any time from your account settings (for example under Settings → Privacy → Data Control → Reset Cookie Consent) or by adjusting your browser settings.

Where we embed content from third parties such as YouTube, those providers may set their own cookies when you view or play that content. Their use of your data is governed by their own privacy policies.

Data from Third-Party Services

To provide some of its features, the Service interacts with third-party services for movie-related data:

  • TMDB (The Movie Database) – for retrieving movie metadata such as titles, release dates, cast and crew, and regional streaming availability.

TMDB does not receive any of your Personal Data. It is used solely as a data source to retrieve publicly available information about movies and the streaming providers that carry them.

Use of Data

ReelsGraph uses the collected data for various purposes, including:

  • To provide and maintain the Service.
  • To personalize your experience, including recommending movies and ranking your library based on your preferences.
  • To allow you to connect with other users, follow their activity, and share your own reviews and lists when you choose to make them public.
  • To provide customer support and respond to your inquiries.
  • To monitor the usage of the Service, diagnose technical issues, and improve performance and reliability.
  • To detect, prevent and address technical issues, abuse, or misuse of the Service.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

Data Used for Recommendations and Profiling

A core feature of ReelsGraph is providing personalized recommendations and ranking lists of movies based on your preferences and activity. To do this, we combine information such as your ratings, the movies in your library, the tags and filters you use, and how you interact with the Service (for example progressing through the discovery queue) to infer a "taste profile" and to order movies in a way that is more likely to be relevant to you.

This type of processing may be considered profiling under certain data protection laws because it involves using your Personal Data to evaluate personal preferences and predict what you may enjoy. However, it does not produce legal or similarly significant effects for you: it is only used to influence how movies are sorted and recommended within the Service. It does not affect your ability to use the Service, access your account, or watch movies on third-party streaming services.

You can influence how your data is used for recommendations by adjusting the settings and filters within the Service, including preference sliders (such as popularity and release date) and sorting options. If you are located in the EEA, the United Kingdom or another region with similar data protection laws, you also have the right to object to this type of processing or to ask us to limit it, as described in the Your Rights section below. If you wish to exercise these rights in relation to recommendations and profiling, please contact us using the details in the Contact Us section.

Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom or another region with similar data protection laws, ReelsGraph's processing of your Personal Data is based on one or more of the following legal grounds:

  • Performance of a contract – We process your Account Data, Movie and Activity Data, and certain Usage Data as necessary to provide and operate the Service, including maintaining your account, importing and updating your library, and delivering personalized recommendations.
  • Legitimate interests – We process certain Usage Data and account-related information to improve and secure the Service, for example to understand how it is used, to prevent abuse, and to maintain reliable operation. When we rely on legitimate interests, we do so only where these interests are not overridden by your rights and interests.
  • Consent – In cases where required by law, we rely on your consent, for example for the use of non-essential cookies and similar technologies, or for optional communications. Where processing is based on your consent, you have the right to withdraw it at any time.
  • Legal obligations – We may process your data where necessary to comply with applicable laws, regulations, or legal processes.

Disclosure of Data

We do not sell your Personal Data.

We may share your information with third parties only in the following situations:

  • Service Providers – We may employ third-party companies and individuals ("Service Providers") to provide hosting, email delivery, analytics and other services that help us operate the Service. For example, we currently use:
    • a hosting provider to run the ReelsGraph servers (currently netcup GmbH in Germany);
    • Amazon Web Services (Amazon Simple Email Service, "SES") to send transactional emails (such as account verification and password reset messages) and, if you have opted in, periodic summary emails;
    • Microsoft Clarity to provide optional session analytics when you enable optional cookies; and
    • providers of embedded content such as YouTube when you choose to play trailers.
These providers may have access to your Personal Data only to perform these tasks on our behalf and are obligated not to disclose or use it for any other purpose. Some of these providers may also process Personal Data as independent controllers for their own purposes as described in their own privacy policies.
  • Legal Requirements – We may disclose your Personal Data if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g. a court or a government agency).
  • Protection of Rights and Safety – We may disclose your Personal Data in good faith where we believe that such action is necessary to protect and defend the rights or property of ReelsGraph, to prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing in connection with the Service, or to protect the personal safety of users of the Service or the public.

Data Retention

We retain your Personal Data for as long as necessary to provide the Service to you, to maintain your account and library, to comply with our legal obligations and to resolve disputes, unless a longer or shorter retention period is required or permitted by law.

In practice, most of your account-related data (such as your email address, library contents, watchlists, reviews, follows and settings) is kept for as long as you maintain an account with us. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize this information in our active databases within a reasonable period of time, subject to any data we may be required to keep for legal or security reasons.

To protect against accidental loss or corruption of data, we maintain automatic system backups. These include encrypted copies of the database and limited copies of certain files that the Service needs to operate (such as profile images and internal cryptographic keys). Backups are stored in a restricted location on the server and may also be stored with a third-party cloud provider for off-site redundancy. Backups are automatically pruned after a short retention period (typically around seven days). They are only used for disaster recovery and are not used for analytics or normal product features.

We also keep server and security logs for a limited time to monitor the Service, troubleshoot problems and prevent abuse (for example, failed login attempts and firewall activity). These logs are automatically rotated and deleted after their retention period has passed, and are generally kept for no more than about 30 days, depending on the log type.

Data Security

The security of your data is important to us. We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your Personal Data against accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorized access, disclosure or other misuse.

While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your Personal Data, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure. Therefore, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

International Transfers

Depending on where you are located and which Service Providers we use, your Personal Data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. These countries may have data protection laws that are different from the laws of your country.

Where required by law, we take appropriate safeguards to ensure that your Personal Data remains protected in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable data protection laws. This may include using standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission or relying on other lawful transfer mechanisms.

Your Rights

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or another region with similar data protection laws, you have certain rights in relation to your Personal Data. Subject to applicable law and some limitations, these include:

  • Right to be informed: to receive clear information about how we collect, use, share, and store your Personal Data (which is the purpose of this Privacy Policy).
  • Right of access: to obtain confirmation of whether we process your Personal Data and to receive a copy of that data, along with certain additional information.
  • Right to rectification: to ask us to correct inaccurate Personal Data or complete data that you believe is incomplete.
  • Right to erasure: to request that we delete some or all of your Personal Data when, for example, it is no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, or you withdraw consent where consent is our legal basis.
  • Right to restrict processing: to ask us to limit how we use your Personal Data in certain circumstances (for example while we verify the accuracy of the data or assess an objection).
  • Right to data portability: to receive certain Personal Data in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format and to have that data transmitted to another controller where technically feasible.
  • Right to object: to object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to our processing of your Personal Data where we rely on legitimate interests. You also have an absolute right to object to the use of your Personal Data for direct marketing.
  • Rights in relation to automated decision-making and profiling: to request that we provide more information about any automated decision-making (including profiling) that produces legal or similarly significant effects concerning you, and to request human review where required by law.

You can exercise these rights by contacting us using the details in the Contact Us section below. We may ask you for additional information to verify your identity before responding. We aim to respond to all valid requests within one month, where required by applicable law, and we will inform you if we need more time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

In practice, you can exercise some of these rights directly from your account settings on ReelsGraph. Under the Data Control section you can:

  • Download Files: obtain a copy of most of the Personal Data we store about your account in a portable .zip file containing .json data.
  • Delete Account: permanently delete your account and associated Personal Data, subject to any limited data we may need to retain for legal or security reasons and for the lifetime of our encrypted backups.
  • Reset Cookie Consent: withdraw or change your consent preferences for non-essential cookies and similar technologies.

Your Choices and Controls

ReelsGraph includes settings that allow you to control how your data is used and how much is shared with other users. For example, you can choose whether your profile, reviews, watchlists and other lists are visible to others, and you can adjust discovery and recommendation settings.

If you have opted in to receive summary emails, you can unsubscribe at any time from your account settings under Settings → General.

You can also contact us at any time if you would like to change how your data is used or shared within the Service, subject to the technical and legal limitations of doing so.

Children's Privacy

Our Service is not directed to individuals under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect Personal Data from anyone under 16. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with Personal Data, please contact us so that we can take appropriate action.

Links to Other Sites

Our Service may contain links to other websites that are not operated by us. If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that third party's site. We strongly advise you to review the privacy policy of every site you visit.

We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies or practices of any third-party sites or services.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "last updated" date at the top of the page.

We may also, where appropriate, notify you by email and/or a prominent notice on the Service.
